Census/StatisticsOf the London boroughs, Camden ranks 22nd in population size with a total population of 198,020. It has the 7th highest population density. At the time of the 2001 Census there were 198,020 people living in Camden. Of this 53,124 or 27% were people from non-white minority communities. Including white minority communities, Camden's black and minority ethnic (BME) population rises to 47.3%. The non-white minority population in Camden has increased from 17.8% of the total population in 1991 to 27% in 2001. The Bangladeshi community, with a total population of 12,569, is the largest BME community representing 6.3% of the total Camden population compared to 3.5% in 1991. Black Africans with a total of 11,795 are the second largest among the BME population representing 6% of the total Camden population. It rose from 2.7% as reported in the 1991 census. The Irish community has a total population of 9,149 in Camden. The Irish category was introduced for the first time in the 2001 census. The single largest refugee community in Camden comes from Somalia. Other recent arrivals are from the Balkans and Eastern European countries as well as West African, especially Congo. The proportion of the Black Caribbean population remained the same at 1.8% of the total population in Camden in 2001 census as it was in 1991. 3.4% of Camden's population were more mixed ethnic background. 15% of primary school and 8% of secondary school pupils are from refugee/asylum seeking households.
